Barry Ramsay, owner of D8, Inc. in Potlatch, Idaho, will present an introduction of its operations with a focus on D8’s Lean Manufacturing implementation. D8 manufactures aluminum molds for foam plastics, molds for rotational molding, thermoforming and vacuum forming tools, and tooling for composites. Most of the molds D8 produces use aluminum sand castings so D8 has a captive pattern shop and a no-bake foundry, and pours A356 castings up to 600 pounds. D8 ships molds and tooling worldwide for customers in the aerospace, automotive, recreation, packaging, medical, electronics, and marine industries. D8’s implementation of the Toyota Production System (Lean Manufacturing) has improved throughput, lowered costs, reduced management overhead, empowered people, and brought in additional business. If a tooling job shop like D8 can implement Lean then any production foundry or job shop foundry can benefit from Lean.
